Archaeological Museum in Thanesar
A very educative place in Thanesar, the Archaeological Museum is situated within the famous Sheikh Chilli’s Tomb. The museum continues to relate to many visitors as it broadens their knowledge about several findings not only in Thanesar sites but in Kurukshetra and neighboring cities of Haryana as well. All the excavations are brought back to the museum and displayed and studied on detail, the result of which is made public also through exhibitions.There remains a direct contact with the Archaeological Survery of India (ASI), which is a government body and looks after the nature of these excavations. Over the years, the museum along with the ASI has managed to gather many interesting findings, all of which can be seen at the museum.

The museum has two galleries which are based on the excavations from past years. These include the Kurukshetra and the Bhagwanpura galleries, both located in the museum.The first gallery takes one back to the different cultures of the city, with findings like ornaments, artillery, sculptures that each have a unique story and a history of their own. The Bhagwanpura gallery has a series of materials collected from the sight with the same name. The city falls ahead of Kurukshetra and its cultural history can be studied easily with all that is showcased in the museum.
These excavations are not just activities conducted by the museum and the ASI, but happen to be a great way of connecting the bygone era with that of the present day people. In turn, it comes out to be highly educative. Schools, colleges and other institutes in the region have students gather in huge numbers each year to witness the exhibitions conducted by the museum. It is almost like a ritual for school trips to make visits to the museum for class trips and otherwise.
